HTML as you may know stands for the short form of Hyper Text Markup Language. It’s a language used for website development.
You know a website, looks similar like this website https://www.eduntial.com . In here the “www” stands for World Wide Web. And the words after that are known as website username and the domain name. “www” is a cname (a type of record in dns, we will discuss all these in another article) or like a subdomain for a domain name.
HTML is a language that basically our web browser understands that’s how we browse a website or, webpage and view it. Basically if we are browsing any website on the web browser that means we are viewing its HTML file that our browser receives from the website server and shows us. Html acts as the frame for a website.
HTML was developed by Tim Berners-Lee. Then it was supported by W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) and WHATWG. You can view any website’s HTML source code by just inspecting the webpage on your favourite web browser or, using any online tool.
HTML website uses some HTML tags that we reference them on CSS style sheets for styling our webpage. Let’s take a look on an example html code.
<h1>Your First Heading</h1> <!-- h1 is the header tag --> <a href="https://www.example.com">Your Example Webpage Link</a> <!-- a is known as the anchor tag and written for links.. --> <img src="image source url like https://www.example.com/example.png" /> <!-- img tag is for image representation -->
We use class and id attributes to identify and design the html using CSS. The latest html released version is HTML5. And here are some of the HTML tags with an easy example.
Here’s the code:
<!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <title>eduntial | Our first HTML Document</title> </head> <body> <header> <h1>Welcome to Our first HTML basics tutorial!</h1> <p>It is our first paragraph of text where we can write anything like we write in our notebook..</p> </header> <footer> <p>Copyright © our copyright footer text.. | <a href="https://www.eduntial.com">eduntial</a></p> </footer> </body> </html>
So now let’s discuss the syntax..
<!DOCTYPE html>: Used for html5 document type <html>: The root element of the html code <head>: Contains the meta information of the document like title, icon, link to css/js files <title>: This shows on the browser tab <body>: Contains the visible content of the document <header>: This mainly contains website branding or introductory content or a set of navigational links <h1>: Used for large heading <p>: Contains paragraph <footer>: Contains the footer of the page, document <a>: Known as anchor element, used to create the hyperlink
And HTML documents have file extensions like .html and .htm. You can write your own html code using note taking apps like Notepad, Notepad++ . For this, you can create a new text document first and then save that document as a Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) file type and write in your html codes. And then when you try to run/open your file on any web browser you can easily view the webpage that you just created.
